In 2009, ELIET is launching a completely redesigned edge trimmer, the ELIET Edge Styler. Eliet is the inventor of the edge trimmer and won the Bronze Are at Agribex in 1997 for it. The new design is primarily intended to increase user comfort and also aims for maximum maneuverability.

WHEEL DRIVE

The machine is equipped with a wheel drive that pushes the moving blade forward. When the blade moves forward, the wheel traction helps to amplify the cutting force; however, the resistance of the ground it must pass through dampens the cutting stroke. When the blade moves backward, the wheel traction counteracts this, creating a damping effect. This wheel drive is easily engaged using the lever on the handlebars.

WHEELS WITH KNOBES

A football player has studs on his shoes for better grip on the pitch. The ELIET Edge Styler was also equipped with studs, albeit rubber ones, to provide better grip on the lawn, especially when it is wet. This has the added benefit that the patio is not damaged when driven over.

MUSSEL CHOICE

This innovative design is a machine primarily designed to mechanize the shaping of lawn edges. The technique used for this involves a cutting blade. The blade makes horizontal cutting movements, removing a small section of sod at the lawn edge and creating a smooth edge that takes on the shape of the blade. Depending on the type of blade used, the machine can be used for a number of other applications:

  • U-shaped blade: cutting shallow grooves in a lawn for installing irrigation systems or DC low-voltage cables.
  • Corner knife: for removing sod between hard paving and a lawn to create a gap and prevent the paving from becoming overgrown.
  • Cable embedding blade: a wire must be laid to define the working area of robotic mowers. With a special blade and unwinding system, the Edge Styler can embed a DC cable shallowly into the turf without damage.
  • Golf bunker knife: allows you to maintain very high sides, as is the case with bunkers on a golf course. The new design also allows the blades to be easily changed without the use of tools, which is naturally time-saving.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

The ELIET Edge Styler features an engine with built-in reduction. This allows the torque to be increased by approximately six times. As a result, the engine does not need to operate at maximum power. 2,800 rpm is more than sufficient to provide both the blade and the wheel drive with adequate power. This feature has a positive effect on fuel consumption, and furthermore, the operator benefits from a reduced noise level.

GUIDE ARROW

If a lawn edging has fallen out or been partially damaged, the reference point for installing a new edging is immediately lost. Consequently, it is advisable to lay a new guideline using cord, separate from the existing edging. Conveniently, use the guide at the front of the edging tool to follow the guideline.

FREE STYLE CURVES

Modern lawn installation features boundless creativity. Rectangular lawn plots have given way to free-form lawn areas. The Edge Styler was designed to effortlessly install precisely those rounded shapes, alongside classic straight edges.

Two elements in the design make this possible :
• The machine is designed to run on two wheels. Two wheels provide perfect lateral stability while still allowing for extreme maneuverability. Although the final machine has three wheels, the third wheel is a swivel wheel and does not affect the machine's maneuverability; instead, it was added to the design at a later stage to enhance operator comfort.
• The blade moves along the centerline of the two load-bearing wheels, ensuring it seamlessly follows the path of the wheels. This makes it easier for the operator to form the desired curve.

FOOT PEDAL WITH RATCHET FUNCTION

To drive the blade into the ground, ELIET utilizes strong leg muscles. For this purpose, a foot pedal has been provided on the left side of the machine. Anyone unable to bring the blade to the desired depth in a single stroke can use the ratchet mechanism and multiple pedal strokes to get the blade to the desired depth.

LOW VIBRATION LEVEL

Since the machine forms the lawn edge based on stabbing movements, this operation logically results in pulsating or jerky behavior, which is unpleasant for the operator who has to endure these vibrations on their arms. The design of ELIET is unique because it ensures that these vibrations remain very limited. The technology behind this is a balancing act involving weight distribution and mass inertia of the machine. The machine's center of gravity is located very low because 30% of the machine's total weight is in the wheels. This means that the center of gravity lies at the level of the blade guide. Due to this low center of gravity, the stabbing pulses of the blade must be almost entirely translated into linear movement of the machine's mass to transmit the vibration. Since the total weight of the machine is nearly 95 kg, the energy will choose the easiest path, and instead of moving the machine, the blade will cut through the ground. The blade has a stabbing frequency of 15 Hz. Due to the machine's mass inertia, it is impossible for it to adopt this frequency, resulting in damping. Additionally, the machine is equipped with a wheel drive that pushes the moving blade forward. When the blade moves forward, the wheel traction helps to amplify the cutting force; however, the resistance of the soil it must traverse dampens the cutting stroke. When the blade moves backward, the wheel traction counteracts this, creating a damping effect. In this way, ELIET succeeds in preventing vibration transmission through the machine's construction. Furthermore, in the Pro version of the machine, supplementary vibration damping is integrated into the steering. This filters out high-frequency vibrations as well.

SWIVEL WHEEL

The machine has 3 wheels; however, the 3rd wheel is a swivel wheel and does not affect the maneuverability of the machine, but was added to the design at a later stage to increase operator comfort. The blade moves along the centerline of the two load-bearing wheels, ensuring that it seamlessly follows the path of the wheels. This makes it easier for the operator to form the desired curve. For cutting straight edges, the swivel wheel can be locked in its upright position. This eliminates the movement of the machine, which is undesirable for cutting straight edges.

ADJUSTABLE HANDLEBAR

The ELIET Edge Styler strives for optimal comfort and ergonomics for the operator. As already mentioned, special efforts have been made to reduce the vibration level for the operator. This prevents upper body fatigue during prolonged work. To enable the operator to adopt the ideal posture during use, the handle is infinitely adjustable in height. Since the machine is also designed to maintain the edges of bunkers on golf courses, the handle is also adjustable laterally at an angle, so that the operator can always work in a comfortable posture, regardless of the undulation and slope of the terrain.

ANTI-DEVIATION DISC

When cutting a free lawn edge, the machine tends to drift out of the edge due to the pressure on the wing when removing the sod. To prevent this, the machine was equipped with an anti-deviation disc. This toothed disc can be lowered, causing the teeth to press into the soil while the machine is being driven. These act as an anchor, as it were, preventing the machine from drifting sideways. This allows for the cutting of smooth, uninterrupted lawn edges.
